A few days ago I accidentally rammed my toothbrush against my gum (my little brother decided to scare me :/). The next day I developed a canker sore on my gum. I didn’t really know what to do so I just let it be hoping it’ll go away for the past two days, but now it’s swollen and it hurts to smile and I have to keep food away from that area (my incisors).

What can I do to get rid of it possibly in the next week?

How Length of Brushing Cleanses Teeth Effectively

While hard work pays off in many other areas of life, harsh brushing of teeth does not seem to have a significant effect when ridding the teeth of sticky plaque. A group of European researchers found out that a healthy oral cavity is not related to the strength of brushing one’s teeth, but its length of time. Studies suggest that the most efficient means of cavity protection is brushing for two minutes with medium force.

According to the research, vigorous teeth brushing may actually do more harm than good. This is because heavy brushing damages the gums, wears down teeth, and may contribute to the corroding of the enamel. All pose potentially serious health problems if left unchecked, according to dentists like Hicham Riba DDS. The research also said that while brushing long and hard does get rid of plaque effectively, after going beyond a certain point, the marginal effectivity of brushing decreases.

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, was designed to determine the most effective way to brush one’s teeth and get rid of plaque.

Plaque is a clear sticky film that coats the teeth. It contains more than 300 species of bacteria which attach to tooth surfaces and produce cavity-causing acids. Dentists like Hicham Riba DDS advise patients to remove this plaque through brushing. If not, it can develop into tartar. Plaque is also the leading cause of gingivitis, periodontitis, as well as dental caries.

In the study, the researchers measured plaque levels in the mouths of respondents after they have brushed their teeth under four different forces and four different periods. The researchers used 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120 seconds, and 180 seconds. The participants used a power toothbrush which exerted forces anywhere from 75 to 300 grams. All of them spend 24 hours without brushing their teeth to determine how well the different techniques removed plaque from their mouths.

The results showed that while longer brushing generally seemed to remove plaque more effectively, brushing for roughly 120 seconds is just as effective in removing plaque as longer brushing times. Furthermore, in those brushing sessions, the participants removed approximately the same amount of plaque using 150 grams of force as when they used higher grams of force. Applying more than 150 grams of force did little to remove additional amounts of plaque.

To properly brush your teeth, most dentists, including Hicham Riba DDS, advise patients to use only short, gentle strokes. Pay extra care to the gum line, hard to reach molars and back teeth, and any restorations you may have, including fillings, crowns, dentures, or bridges. Clean first the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then the outer surfaces of the lower teeth.

I have medium fine straight hair that doesn’t like to curl and perms are too pricy (doesn’t look good on me anyway – I end up looking like Goldilocks – only I am a brunette with shades of red hues), and I have tried curlers, my curling iron, gel, volume mousse, shaping mousse, a milky hair lotion, and hairspray, and when I curl my hair, it just doesn’t like to stay curled. My curling iron set to high heat and gets warm (not hot) and I leave it in for about 30 seconds to a min, then gently brush the curl down, and it doesn’t stay wavy/curled. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have twins that are 8 months old. My daughter is more than healthy but my son according to the doctor’s last check up is under weight. Part of this is due to them being born premature and also part of it because my sons pukes ALL THE TIME. I am so frustrated because no one seems to be able to give me any answers. My son cries to get fed so we feed him cereal mixed with fruit (1 cup) and 6-7 oz of formula every 4 hours but it seems that he is still hungry when we stop feeding him. However, in the span of 2 hours (for instance today) he threw up at least 8 times, like he was fed too much. I am not sure what to do. We feed him so much that his stomach is hard and burp him that way he is not to airy, lay him upright for 30 minutes to an hour that way he is not moving around too much to cause too much commotion, but still, the minute we put him in his walker, its all over. He also makes himself throw up by sticking his fingers down his throat, he smiles and laughs afterwards! Weird

Also switch formulas and ceareals and change the fruits to just bannanas less acid than applesauce.

Tooth brushing Mistake No. 1: Not Using the Right Toothbrush

Consider the size of your mouth when picking a toothbrush. For example if you are straining to open wide enough to let the brush in, the brush is probably too big. The handle should be comfortable; it should feel as comfortable as holding a utensil when you eat. Think of it this way: The more comfortable it is in your mouth and your hand, then the more likely you will use it and use it the right way.

Which is the better toothbrush: Electric or manual?
It’s a personal preference. A person who brushes well with a manual will do as well as a person who brushes well with an electric. How you use the toothbrush, how well you brush, is more important than the toothbrush you use (manual or electric)

Tooth brushing Mistake No. 2: Not Picking the Right Bristle

Some toothbrushes have angled bristles, others straight. So is one type better? No, it’s more related to technique you’re using to brush than the type of bristles your toothbrush has. What is important when buying a toothbrush? Bristles that are too stiff can aggravate the gums. The ADA recommends a soft-bristled brush.
Bristles should be sturdy enough to remove plaque but not hard enough to damage your teeth when used the right way.

Tooth brushing Mistake No. 3: Not Brushing Often Enough or Long Enough

Softly brushing your teeth at least twice a day is recommended, but three times a day is best. When there’s too much time between brushings bacterial plaque will build up which increases the risk of gum inflammation and other problems.

How long should you brush your teeth for? Brushing should last at least two minutes & three minutes is even better.
The number isn’t necessarily important, it’s just so people take the time to clean all the surfaces. It’s best to divide the mouth into sections and spend 30 seconds a section.

Tooth brushing Mistake No. 4: Brushing Too Often or Too Hard

While brushing your teeth three times a day is ideal, excessive brushing could expose the root of the tooth to irritation, and that could in turn irritate the gums. Brushing vigorously can also erode tooth enamel. The trick is to brush very gently for two to three minutes.

Tooth brushing Mistake No. 5: Not Brushing Correctly

Long horizontal strokes along the gum line can lead to abrasions. Aim your bristles at the gum line at a 45-degree angle and do short strokes or vibrations. Softly brush up and down your teeth, not across your teeth. The strokes should be vertical, not horizontal. Be sure to brush outer and inner tooth surfaces, the chewing surfaces, and your tongue.

I’m 25. I just started my career. I am self employed, with no insurance. My teeth have always been really weak and they chip easily and I get cavities easily. I have grinded my teeth all my life. When I was younger, I used to ask my dad to please take me to the dentist but he never did. He said it was too expensive. : (

I brush allllll the time, I carry a toothbrush in my purse and I floss. I’ve gotten into the habit not to smile much. I’m a hair stylist and I have to look good! I have a chip on my front tooth and its so embarassing. The dentist said it would cost $ 500 to fix it without insurance and I just dont make enough. I do not want to go to a dental school, so please dont suggest that. Plus there are none in the area. I want an experienced dentist. I feel that by the time I can afford all the dental work that it will be too late and extremely expensive. Almost every tooth in my mouth is chipped. I dont have enough credit to qualify for CareCredit. What do I do, not smile?

You could either get a low interest credit card,(although if you don’t have any or good credit you may have to settle for a higher interest rate, but will be worth it in the long run!) or take out a small($ 5000-)loan to get orthodontal work done to correct your bite, then any bondings or veneers if needed.
Most offices take a down payment and then you pay a portion at each visit until your treatment is done.

30 second brush question by : Kissing breath,is this ok?
I brush twice a day with strong mouthwash and with the mouthwash I swish around for more than 30 seconds,brush and then rinse. I use lip balm, drink juice whenever my mouth is dry and use a mint after I’ve eaten at a restaurant. Is this kissable breath?

Colgate Duraphat 2800ppm Fluoride Toothpaste – I am finding it difficult to adhere to the maximum of 60 seconds brushing (I tried hanging a watch from the shaving mirror). Is the 60 second limit really critical.
Also – the “no drink until 30 minutes after brushing” – is there any reason why a patient could not use a drinking straw – being careful to ensure that all drinks are directed behind the teeth?

i didn’t find it where it says “maximum of 60 seconds brushing” but instead “brush the teeth thoroughly for one minute, morning and evening. Spit out after use; for best results do not drink or rinse for 30 minutes.”

i believe this means you brush thoroughly a MINIMUM of 60 seconds (the longer you brush, the better). for why would they ask you not to rinse or drink for 30 minutes after brushing if 60 seconds is critical? not rinsing or avoiding drinks for half an hour gives more time for the residual fluoride to take effect (the longer it stays on the teeth, the better).

but if it you really are that thirsty, go ahead drink. you wouldn’t want to die of thirst just because of Colgate. besides, the benefits of residual fluoride in toothpaste is a cumulative one. it requires long term use for us to see the results. quenching your thirst once in a while less than 30 minutes after brushing won’t have much of an effect.
