First, I want to say that despite the catchy title to this article, there are no guarantees that you can or will stop gum disease. I’m simply going to give you some helpful tips. Each human body is different, has different chemistry, has a different diet, is taken care of by the owner differently – and there are a host of other differences. Therefore, no one could possibly guarantee that following steps a, b and c will have a definite impact or end result. Even doctors and dentists can not and will not make such a guarantee of their treatment plans.

However, I do aim to give you a couple of helpful hints that your doctor or dentist probably have not mentioned to you. I will skip the whole brushing and flossing thing – you already know about that. Brushing and flossing are beneficial and you should certainly be doing them according to your doctor’s directions.

Here is something you probably do not know about: xylitol. This simple five carbon sugar is different from regular sugar. The bacteria in your mouth cannot use it, they derive no nutrition value whatsoever from it. Could you imagine what it would be like if all processed foods used this kind of sugar rather than sucrose (table sugar)? In Finland, during WWII they found out. The dental association there discovered a lower instance of dental disease attributed to xylitol. They used xylitol as a substitute because table sugar became scarce during the war.

Another tip that many are already aware of is the use of an oral irrigator. Not all are created equal and you need to do your research to find the one that will benefit you most. In my own personal experience, an oral irrigator was able to save me from a Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) treatment. I probably saved hundreds of dollars even after the insurance benefit. A SRP treatment typically runs about 1600 dollars for all four quadrants.

If you think that sixteen hundred dollars is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a dental treatment, I agree with you. I would like to challenge the dental industry to come up with some lower cost alternatives. Here is one suggestion: Prevention.

Every friday night, I go to our schools football games. At half time, I always watch the marching band. My crush (who is a year older than me…) is a percussionist, and I always get up to the gate so he can see me really well–he’s probably only 4 or 5 feet away. So what I finally started doing, is when the people cheer after every song, I cheer really loud to get his attention (about…60 percent of the time I don’t have to do that), and when he looks over, I smile. I was shocked when he smiled back! We’ve been doing this about 4 weeks now!! ha ha. Maybe more than 4 weeks.
Whenever I have a friend with me watching, he smiles…Rarely. Maybe twice, and just like 2 second smiles. When I’m by myself, he smiles all the time.
When he switches percussion Instruments, I have a good excuse to go towards there, because my sister has a percussion part. So we get to smile MORE! (Good for me!)
Also at lunch he sits a table in front of me, and occasionally, he looks back (or towards me…depending on where he sits) and smiles…but only rarely:(
So basically, I’m sick of just smiling. I really want to make it more obvious I like him. The only “flirting” he does basically is at the games. He never talks to me…and we never really can talk (except sometimes after games, but there’s a lot of people around and unfortunately, that involves my mom.) And also because he’s a year older than me…and no classes together.

so what are good ways to flirt back? Winking? ha ha.

also, there is an event towards the end of the year where all the band people spend the night at the school, and it’s a lot of fun…what could I do there? There’s a HUGE watergun fight…and then there’s a crazy hair contest…he he.

ALSO! I’m going to get to play in the stands with the marching band (because I’m a year to young to be in marching band, dang it!) so I get to spend a few hours playing in the stands with him (my insturment section is somewhat near him) and then we all eat chicken afterwards…

I just barely got used to my braces. First, I brush the bottom row of my teeth for 5 minutes, with prescribed toothpaste. Then, after I rinse off the toothbrush and reapply the prescribed toothpaste, I brush the top row of my teeth for 5 minutes. (I brush in the correct pattern, circles around the segment thingies, and then brush on the top of the molars.) After I’m done brushing, I use my Waterpik to “floss” my teeth for around 5 minutes. After that, I use a special braces-type flossing appliance (a floss pick, but with a flat “terrain” on one of the sides) for around 10 minutes. Finally, I rinse out my teeth with Crest anti-gingivitis/antiplaque Multiprotection Oral Rinse for thirty seconds. However, I ALWAYS seem to have semi-swollen gums after I’m done (I’m really trying my hardest to keep them from swelling). I keep on asking my parents if I have gingivitis, and they keep on telling me no, but I’m 14, so I keep on questioning them about that. My gums don’t feel tender, they don’t hurt, and I don’t feel pain or see blood when I brush, floss, and Waterpik. However, they are a light shade of red, and they are swollen. I don’t get why this is happening, because I devote SO much time into making sure this DOESN’T happen. I make sure I get an intake of Vitamin C and other healthy vitamins required for keeping teeth protected daily, so I’d prefer not to get an answer of “I need to take more Vitamin C.” (Remember, I DO have braces.) Thanks!

To Dent: I use it the way Waterpik said so in the instructions, so I think that is out of the question. I currently am not on any medication for my teeth. However, my braces could be irritating me. Also, I grind and clench a lot with my teeth, almost definitely because of high school stress and a mild depression.

Well I have been getting pain in a tooth of mine. That tooth pain is not a braces pain. It feels like a cavaty pain. From what I remember the people did not clean my teeth before gluing on the brackes. Maybe my tooth was “dirty” and they glued a braccket on top of it and the trapped food/dirt gave my tooth a cavaty. How would they clean the teeth before putting on your braces?

Crest!!! definitely!! I used them before and they do really work. I am a smoker too and after about 6 months to a year my teeths started to turn yellow again so i just used the crest stripes again. It is a little expensive however it does really work. All the other products ive tryed dont seem to work for me
